Cristiano Ronaldo makes shock claim after Real Madrid win

'I didn't celebrate because I'm unhappy' - Cristiano Ronaldo makes shock claim after Real Madrid win

The Portuguese international scored his 150th goal for the club during the 3-0 victory over Granada, but afterwards claimed he is far from happy due to a 'professional issue'

Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo made the shock claim that he was unhappy with the club after he refused to celebrate his 149th and 150th Blancos goals in the win over Granada on Sunday.
The Portuguese was the catalyst behind his side's first win of the new Liga season, but his lack of elation on the back of two landmark strikes was the main talking point after the game, which he explained after full time.

"I'm sad because of a professional issue and the club know why. That's why I didn't celebrate the goals, because I'm not happy. The people [at the club] know why," he told reporters after the match.

"It's nothing to do with Iniesta [winning European player award]. I won't talk about this any more and I will concentrate on Portugal for now. There are more important things [than this]."

"The people at the club know about this. I can't say any more."

Cristiano Ronaldo's contract will cost the Spanish side a fortune in taxes

Real Madrid's €45m dilemma: Renewing Cristiano Ronaldo's contract will cost the Spanish side a fortune in taxes

Extending the Portuguese forward's deal will see the capital club liable to pay over 50 per cent tax on their prized asset, on top of the vast sums already paid on a fee and wages

Cristiano Ronaldo is sad. That's exactly how the player himself described his current state of mind after Sunday night's 3-0 win over Granada, in which he scored twice, but refused to celebrate. His post-match quotes set the alarm bells ringing at Real Madrid, already aware of Cristiano's unhappiness following a meeting the previous day with president Florentino Perez and sporting director Jose Angel Sanchez. But while the club were aware of the issue, they had not imagined it would cause such a furore the following day.

Ronaldo's reasons remain unclear, with Florentino, coach Jose Mourinho and even agent Jorge Mendes said to be in the dark regarding the player's problems with the club and his decision to air his grievances to the press on Sunday.

According to some of Spain's most prestigious press, it seems to be a combination of factors which have contributed to Cristiano's current melancholy. They all agree on one thing, however: at the root of the problem lie the negotiations for a new contract which are yet to bear fruit.

Ronaldo's agents have been in discussion with Madrid for some time over a deal to renew the Portuguese's contract. Cristiano has a deal until 2015 and receives around €10 million each year before tax. Performances on the pitch have been outstanding and, as the club had agreed in principle to extend his deal, the signature seemed a forgone conclusion.

The 'Beckham Law' | The Englishman benefited from low tax rates in Spain
Over the last three years, players such as Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Samuel Eto'o have earned more money than Ronaldo, despite performing at a lower level than the 27-year-old. And it is believed Cristiano was keen on upping his salary to become the world's highest-earning footballer this summer. Madrid, meanwhile, are aware of his worth - both on and off the pitch.

The problem, however, lies in the abolition of the so-called 'Beckham Law', which allowed foreigners who had lived in Spain for less than 10 years and who earned above €120,000 per annum to pay a lower tax rate of around 23 per cent and not the usual 45%. David Beckham was one of the first to take advantage of the law after his move in 2003.

Having arrived when the law was still in force, players like Cristiano and Kaka still benefit from those advantages, too, but will cease to do so as soon as they sign new contracts. That means Madrid are currently paying around €15.5m per year in wages to allow Ronaldo to take home €10m after tax. But if the reported raise to €15m becomes a reality with a renewal, the club will be forced to fork out a massive €31m, losing over half of that total to the taxman every year.

It is conceivable, then, that Madrid are currently unwilling to renew Ronaldo's deal on those terms, given that they can keep Cristiano until 2015 and save around €45m in taxes by letting him see out his present contract, albeit with the considerable risk of losing their star player for free at the end of his deal.

Bertrand signs new five-year Chelsea deal

After receiving a call-up to the senior England squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers the Blues' left-back has also been rewarded for his fine club form with a new contract

Ryan Bertrand, Chelsea (Getty Images)
Chelsea have confirmed that Ryan Bertrand has signed a new five-year deal with the club.
The left-back has been at the Blues since 2005, when he joined their academy from Gillingham, but did not make his debut until 2011 after five separate loan spells to the lower leagues.
The 23-year-old is seen as a long-term replacement for full-back Ashley Cole but has recently been given a more attacking role on the left-wing, a position he played in his biggest game for Chelsea - the Champions League final, and his European debut, against Bayern Munich.

Bertrand has now made 15 starts for the Stamford Bridge outfit, adding four more appearances from the substitutes' bench, while playing a role in the club's impressive start to this season's Premier League.

The player's form and continued selection saw him make Stuart Pearce's Team GB Olympic squad for London 2012 this summer, before also being handed his England debut by Roy Hodgson in a friendly victory over Italy in August.

The Englishman has also now been called to the senior squad for the upcoming World Cup 2014 qualifiers with Moldova and Ukraine.

Bertrand had formerly represented the Three Lions across the youth age groups, and has since expressed his delight at making the step-up to the senior side.

Reading vow to attack 'best team in Europe'

Mikele Leigertwood says Reading will have a go at Stamford Bridge this evening

  • Mikele Leigertwood is aiming to avoid a third relegation from the Barclays Premier League
A day before his newly promoted Reading side travel to Stamford Bridge in the Barclays Premier League Brian McDermott has hailed Chelsea as the rightful European champions after watching them beat Wigan Athletic 2-0 at the weekend.
"They are the best team in Europe," the Reading manager said. "They were really, really good on Sunday.
"It will be a great challenge for us tomorrow night"
Brian McDermott
"They started off really well. They got a couple of goals early on and could have scored another one when Fernando Torres went through.
"But it will be a great challenge for us tomorrow night."
Despite this challenge, the Reading midfielder Mikele Leigertwood has vowed that his side will attack Roberto Di Matteo’s team after earning a point with a last-minute penalty at home to Stoke City on Saturday.
"You can't go in to any games fearing teams or sitting back. You have to attack and put teams under pressure and I'm sure we'll do that tomorrow," Leigertwood told a press conference.
"We have pace in the side and strength up front with Pog [Pavel Pogrebnyak].
"We'll play with a high tempo and that will be good for us. We want to give a good account of ourselves and go there and win hopefully.
"We have taken belief from watching teams like Swansea, Norwich and QPR. They all stayed up and it shows that if you go and attack you can do well in this league."
"If you go and attack you can do well in this league"
Mikele Leigertwood
Leigertwood has been relegated twice from the Premier League, with Sheffield United and Crystal Palace respectively, and he does not want to go through the same experience with Reading this term.
"Being relegated is never nice so I am more determined than ever," the 29-year-old said. "I want to go that one step further than I did with Palace and stay up and hopefully finish my career in the Premier League.
"It feels good to be back in the Premier League. Every footballer wants to be playing at the top of their game against the best players in the league so for me it's fantastic."

Di Matteo delight at strong-finishing Chelsea

Di Matteo delight at strong-finishing Chelsea

Italian pleased by Chelsea's display; Brian McDermott 'proud' in defeat

  • Roberto Di Matteo was pleased by Chelsea's attacking display against Reading
  • Frank Lampard gave Chelsea an early lead from the spot
  • Pavel Pogrebnyak levelled the scores with a fabulous header
  • Guthrie gave Reading a shock lead with his free kick
  • Cech was unable to hold on to Guthrie's free kick on its way to the net
  • Gary Cahill equalised for Chelsea with a long-range shot
  • Fernando Torres converted Ashley Cole's cross to restore Chelsea's lead
Roberto Di Matteo was delighted with his side's strong finish as Chelsea came from behind to seal a 4-2 victory against Reading, while Reading's Brian McDermott resolved to remain true to his attacking ideology.
Despite taking a 17th-minute lead through Frank Lampard's second penalty in as many matches the Londoners found themselves behind at half-time as Reading responded with two goals in four minutes by Pavel Pogrebnyak and Danny Guthrie, whose free-kick was spilled by Petr Cech.
Chelsea rallied in the second half, however, as Gary Cahill levelled the match with a 69th-minute long shot, Fernando Torres tapped in from close range with nine minutes remaining and Branisalv Ivanovic scored in added time as Reading threw men forward – including goalkeeper Adam Federici – in search of an equaliser.
"I was very happy with the team performance for long periods of the game"
Roberto Di Matteo
Their second successive victory takes the Blues top of the Barclays Premier League for the first time since November 2010 to the delight of Di Matteo. "We are very pleased with six points after two games," the Italian tactician told the club's official website.
"I was very happy with the team performance for long periods of the game. We lost our flow after Reading scored their equaliser and second goal, but apart from that, very good, and we finished very strongly again."
Chelsea's second match was brought forward as a result of their involvement in the UEFA Super Cup next Friday and the European club champions took full advantage.
"Keeping in mind that we've played a game more than other teams, for us it's good we've won our two opening games," he continued. "Wigan away and this game against a promoted team was a tough game, as you could see tonight, and credit to Reading.
"The way we started the game was very enjoyable. Our crowd went a bit quiet when Reading equalised but again at the end they pushed us on and showed how good they are.
"I don't know if we will stay at the top but we are taking it game by game and will enjoy tonight's victory. Then tomorrow morning we will think about the next game."
"We have to try and be solid to win more games"
Roberto Di Matteo
Di Matteo suggested that Chelsea, who were without the injured David Luiz, will need to look stronger at the back for Saturday's visit of Newcastle United, but was pleased with his side's goal return from their first two matches.
"We were very offensive in the second half and lost our balance a bit but had to take the risk. I would like to think we are defensively quite good, we had a clean sheet on the first day, Reading did well tonight but we've scored six goals in two games. We have to try and be solid to win more games."
Reading manager Brian McDermott was left feeling frustrated at a match that slipped out of his side’s grasp in the last nine minutes.

'Gutted'

"We didn't deserve to lose," he told the club's official website. "We're disappointed with the result and I'm gutted for the players because I didn't just think we were going to draw, I thought we were going to win. It's a shame.
"We probably dropped a little bit deep after half-time but I thought we got through it and weathered that. We had scored a fantastic goal through Pavel and maybe could have had another from Ian Harte's free kick, [Alex] Pearcey could have got on the end of it.
"I always said when I got this job I would try to win games - I'll stick to that"
Brian McDermott
"If you go in 3-1 it's a real plus. But our fans will go home with real belief and will be very proud."
McDermott adopted an offensive approach throughout the match and brought on attacking players in the form of Adam Le Fondre, Noel Hunt and Hal Robson-Kanu despite the hosts' fightback.
"Even at 2-2 I thought we were right in the game," he added. "It wasn't a case of chasing it. I always said when I got this job I would try to win games. If you do that, sometimes it comes for you and we've won a lot of games with that philosophy, I'll stick to that."
